Choosing among the best tattoo artists in Calgary starts with the artwork you want to wear. An artist whose portfolio is ideal for a large Japanese-inspired piece may not be your first choice for a small fine-line design. Match the artist's demonstrated work to your idea before comparing hourly rates.

This is a research-based shortlist of artists and studios with publicly available portfolio or booking information. It is not a scored inspection of their work or hygiene practices, and we have not personally received tattoos from every artist. Availability changes, so use the linked sources to confirm current books and studio affiliations.

Calgary artists to research

Antony Flemming: Six and Grace

Antony Flemming's official website identifies him as a tattoo artist, painter and founder of Calgary's Six and Grace. His published work and background make his portfolio a useful starting point for people considering an illustrative or neo-traditional direction.

At the time reviewed, his website said regular books were closed while inviting enquiries about selected projects. Do not treat an enquiry form as a confirmed appointment. Send a concise description of the idea, placement and approximate size, and follow the artist's current submission instructions.

James Tex: Deadly Tattoos

James Tex's booking profile identifies Deadly Tattoos in Calgary and describes illustrative and Japanese-influenced work, along with custom booking information.

Review complete pieces and larger compositions rather than selecting an artist from one cropped social image. If you want a cover-up, send the existing tattoo information requested by the artist and ask whether an in-person assessment is needed before any design or price is agreed.

Doug Fink, also known as Horihyo: Bushido Tattoo

Bushido Tattoo lists Doug Fink as its owner and describes traditional Japanese tebori among the studio's services. The site explains that consultations are part of the custom-tattoo process.

This is a specific style and method to discuss directly with the artist. Ask how your idea, placement and project size fit the work shown in the portfolio. Do not select a specialist technique simply because it sounds distinctive; make sure you understand the proposed process.

Bushido's wider artist roster

Bushido also lists artists including Wil Yee, Kennedy Knight, Malinda GG and Cale Kristel. Their inclusion provides more portfolios to explore, not a claim that they all work in the same style.

Send a reference brief to the studio if you are unsure which artist fits. Ask for current examples from the person who would do the tattoo, rather than judging everyone by the studio's combined gallery.

Smilin' Buddha: another studio to browse by artist

Smilin' Buddha describes a Calgary studio with artists working across several styles, including traditional, geometric and fine-line designs. Its site invites consultation enquiries.

Treat it as a place to investigate individual portfolios. A long-established studio name does not tell you which current artist is best suited to your concept, and staff or guest-artist availability can change.

How to assess a portfolio

Look for work similar in size, placement and style to your proposed tattoo. Ask to see healed examples where available, since a freshly photographed tattoo does not show how the piece looks later.

Notice the complete composition as well as small details. For a sleeve or larger project, discuss how separate elements will fit together across the body. For lettering, review the exact wording and spelling carefully before the stencil is approved.

References should communicate what you like about a style or subject. Ask for an original design rather than requesting an exact copy of another person's custom tattoo.

Consultation and pricing questions

Ask whether the artist charges by the hour, day or piece, and what the estimate includes. Discuss likely session count, deposits, cancellation rules, design revisions and touch-up terms. Do not assume a consultation quote covers every future change.

The lowest hourly rate is not necessarily the lowest project cost. The final total depends on the design, size, placement and time involved. We have not published a generic Calgary price range because the projects and booking models are not directly comparable.

Plan around work, clothing and other appointments

Ask the artist what practical preparation and aftercare instructions apply to the appointment. If you have a medical concern, medication question or healing issue, consult an appropriate healthcare professional rather than relying on a general article.

Plan clothing around the placement and the studio's instructions. If you have professional headshots, a wedding or a custom-suit fitting coming up, discuss timing rather than assuming a new tattoo will be ready for every activity immediately.

If you are also considering a medical procedure, the Calgary plastic-surgeon comparison guide explains credential checks. That is a separate decision; ask the treating professionals about the timing of any overlapping plans.

Before booking

Confirm the artist, studio address, consultation process, deposit terms and how to communicate changes. Ask the studio to explain its hygiene procedures and written aftercare information. Never assume a stock photograph or a directory rating establishes those details.

Choose an artist whose existing work fits the project and who can explain the design and booking process clearly. A considered consultation is a better starting point than rushing to fill the first available appointment.
