Bookkeeping services in Calgary are easiest to compare when every provider prices the same workload. A business with one bank account and a few invoices is different from a retailer handling payment processors, inventory and payroll. The monthly fee only becomes meaningful when you know what it covers.

This guide compares published local service packages and the questions worth asking before handing over your records. It is a service-selection guide, not advice on how to file a particular tax return.

Calgary bookkeeping providers to compare

AccountingMD: fixed plans with stated transaction limits

AccountingMD's pricing lists an Essentials plan at $295 per month for sole proprietors and small firms with approximately 50 monthly transactions and up to two bank or credit-card accounts. Its listed inclusions include reconciliations, monthly financial reports and a year-end package.

The Growth plan is listed at $595 per month for approximately 150 transactions, with additional services. Ask how transactions are counted and what happens when volume exceeds the plan. A sales payout can represent many underlying customer transactions.

Manage My Books: ongoing bookkeeping and QuickBooks support

Manage My Books advertises standard monthly bookkeeping starting at $425. It also offers setup, training and support around QuickBooks Online. The page states that the QuickBooks subscription is separate from the bookkeeping service fee.

This is worth comparing if you want help using the software as well as someone to maintain the books. Clarify which tasks stay with your team and which the bookkeeper takes over.

Monthly work versus catch-up work

An ongoing fee often assumes the books are already current. Several months of missing receipts, unreconciled balances or duplicate imports can require a separate cleanup project before regular service begins. AccountingMD's FAQ explicitly separates catch-up work from monthly bookkeeping.

Ask for the cleanup scope, the periods involved, what information you must supply and how completion will be documented. Avoid comparing a first-month cleanup quote with another firm's ongoing maintenance fee.

What belongs in a useful monthly package?

At a minimum, establish exactly which accounts the provider reconciles and which reports you receive. Ask when the reports will arrive after month-end and whether someone will explain unusual items.

Other tasks may be included, optional or outside scope:

  • Processing supplier bills and customer invoices.
  • Tracking outstanding receivables.
  • Payroll processing and related reporting.
  • Sales-tax preparation or filing support.
  • Inventory or project reporting.
  • Preparing records for the year-end accountant.
  • Answering routine questions between reporting dates.

Do not infer that “full service” covers every item. Have the provider name the responsible person and deliverables for each task you need.

Bookkeeper or accountant?

Bookkeeping generally concerns maintaining transaction records and producing organized financial information. Accounting and tax engagements can involve different qualifications, responsibilities and deliverables. A bookkeeping package should state whether tax returns or financial-statement services are included or handled by another professional.

AccountingMD, for example, says its year-end package goes to your accountant. That distinction prevents an owner from discovering at year-end that an expected service was never part of the agreement.

For business structure or commercial contracts, legal advice is separate again. The Outsiders Law profile is a directory starting point for exploring business legal services, not a replacement for accounting support.

Software access and ownership

Ask whose account holds the accounting subscription and whether you retain administrator access. Confirm how documents are uploaded, how permissions are assigned and how records can be exported if you change providers.

A practical onboarding plan should explain the request for bank information without relying on casually shared passwords. Ask about the provider's secure access process and who within its team can see the records. Clarify backup, retention and handover arrangements before the relationship starts.

If your business also commissions recurring creative work, compare administrative needs with a realistic operating budget. Our recording studio guide illustrates how hourly services and project deliverables can differ; the same discipline helps when scoping professional support.

Questions to send with a quote request

Describe the business activity, monthly transaction count, number of accounts, payment processors, employees, existing software and whether the books are current. Provide an approximate volume without emailing sensitive financial documents to every firm you are considering.

Ask for the monthly fee, onboarding costs, software charges, excluded tasks, turnaround times and cancellation terms. Confirm taxes and the process for approving additional work.

The published $295 and $425 starting points above show that different local models exist. They do not establish what your business should pay. Choose the provider that can explain the scope clearly, keep your records accessible and deliver information you can use.
