Bathroom Renovation Cost in Calgary: A Practical Budget Guide

Compare Calgary bathroom remodel costs, shower and finish choices, hidden-work allowances and relevant local renovation businesses.

A full bathroom remodel in Calgary commonly appears in published contractor guides around $12,000–$30,000, with custom projects extending beyond $30,000. That is a planning bracket drawn from local guides, not a quote or measured citywide average. A vanity-and-paint refresh is a much smaller scope than rebuilding a shower and replacing the room's finishes.

The best budget starts with a list of what is staying. Keep that list beside every quote so you can see whether contractors are pricing the same bathroom.

What local guides show

Statera Contracting's small-bathroom guide gives $12,000–$28,000 for a typical small-bathroom renovation and $7,000–$12,000 for a budget refresh.

Elevation Renovations' published guide, dated December 2025, lists basic full remodels at $12,000–$18,000, mid-range projects at $18,000–$30,000 and custom work at $30,000–$50,000+. Its older publication date is a reason to obtain a current quote, not to treat its numbers as a fixed 2026 rate card.

These prices are CAD. Confirm tax, fixtures, demolition, permits and restoration of adjacent areas before using any range as your spending limit.

A small room still has several trades

A bathroom's floor area does not describe its entire scope. A compact room may still need plumbing, electrical work, a fan, shower construction, finish carpentry and painting.

Ask for a room-by-room specification rather than estimating solely by square foot. It should identify the tub or shower, toilet, vanity, countertop, faucets, mirror, lighting and flooring. Include towel bars, accessories and final caulking so the handover expectations are clear.

Photographs of a finished bathroom are helpful references, but ask the contractor to identify which features in the photograph are included in the price.

The shower deserves its own conversation

Have the contractor describe the complete proposed shower assembly, including the base, waterproofing system, tile or wall panels, drain and enclosure. Ask who is responsible for each part and how the work will be documented.

Compare an off-the-shelf enclosure and a custom design as separate options. Niches, benches, unusual dimensions and glass selections should have clear prices or allowances. If a feature is essential for accessibility, explain the practical requirement before a design is finalized.

A replacement shower also creates an opportunity to ask whether the existing room arrangement still suits you. Do that early; changing the plan after materials arrive can affect both the budget and schedule.

Know what happens behind the finishes

Ask how the contractor will deal with concealed damage or unsuitable existing work discovered during demolition. The contract should explain the approval process for additional repairs.

If supply piping is being replaced elsewhere in the home, coordinate it before the bathroom is closed up. Our Poly-B replacement cost guide explains why plumbing completion and finished-wall restoration are different milestones.

Use the City's home-improvement permit resources to discuss approvals for your exact scope. Put permit and inspection responsibilities in the agreement rather than assuming they belong to someone else.

Control selections and allowances

A quote with a $1,000 fixture allowance can look lower than one including fixtures you have already selected. If your selections cost $1,800, the original allowance has not made the project $800 cheaper.

Ask for a selection schedule with model numbers, dimensions and purchase responsibilities. Check delivery dates before agreeing to demolition, particularly if this is the home's only bathroom.

If you supply materials, agree on who checks them for suitability and who handles replacements when something arrives damaged. That conversation is easier before a missing part stops the installation.

Compare local renovation profiles

Edge Pro Builders lists bathroom and master-ensuite renovations in Calgary. For an Okotoks project, Okotoks Bathroom Pros has a profile listing several bathroom renovation types. Confirm service area, availability and the exact work each business will manage.

A profile helps you find a relevant provider; it does not replace a project quote or mean the business charges the prices cited above. Send the same photographs and scope to each contractor you approach.

For a larger home update, compare the kitchen renovation guide and ask whether combining projects changes management costs, sequencing or disruption. Keep separate budgets so one room's upgrades do not silently absorb the other room's funds.

Questions to settle before work starts

Can I keep using the bathroom?

Ask for the expected period without a toilet, shower and sink separately. A room may become partly usable before it is fully complete, but that needs to be agreed.

Should I move the toilet or shower?

Have the contractor price the existing layout and the proposed change. Decide whether the functional improvement justifies the additional work.

Is a fixed quote enough?

A fixed price is useful when the scope is clear. Check exclusions, allowances, concealed-condition terms and change approvals as carefully as the total.

Finish the planning with a written handover checklist: operation of fixtures and ventilation, outstanding items, warranty documents and the contact for follow-up. That gives both you and the contractor a clear definition of completion.
