For a full kitchen renovation in Calgary, $35,000–$70,000 is a useful starting bracket from Kay2's published 2026 guide. Cosmetic projects can be lower, while custom cabinetry, structural changes and premium selections can take the total well beyond that range.
The key is defining “renovation.” Painting cabinets, replacing a kitchen in its existing layout and moving walls are three different purchases. Decide which project you need before comparing prices.
Published Calgary budgets by scope
Kay2's kitchen cost guide lists cosmetic refreshes from roughly $15,000, full renovations at $35,000–$70,000 and luxury/custom projects at $80,000–$140,000 and above.
Calgary Carpentry provides a second useful breakdown: $25,000–$45,000 for cabinet replacement in the same layout, $40,000–$65,000 for a full renovation within the same footprint, and $55,000–$90,000+ for layout changes or an island addition.
These are the businesses' published planning ranges, not a combined market average. All figures are CAD. Their scope definitions differ, so confirm appliances, GST, design and permits in your own written quote.
Choose the scope before the finishes
Write down what does not work in your current kitchen. Is it storage, the location of the dishwasher, insufficient preparation space or simply worn surfaces? Rank those problems.
If the layout works and the cabinet boxes are suitable, ask a contractor whether refinishing or refacing is viable. If storage is the main problem, discuss cabinet interiors and dimensions before choosing door colours. If circulation is poor, ask for a layout proposal before ordering appliances.
The Paintology Paintworks profile lists cabinet refinishing among its services. That makes it a relevant starting point for exploring a refresh. It does not imply that refinishing is appropriate for every existing kitchen.
Build a complete project budget
Request separate descriptions for demolition, cabinetry, countertops, flooring, backsplash, fixtures, electrical work, plumbing work and finishing. You do not need the contractor's internal margins; you need to know what the finished price buys.
Pay particular attention to allowances. A cabinet allowance and a fully selected cabinet package are not equivalent. Ask what happens when your selections exceed an allowance and how credits work if you choose something less expensive.
Create a second list of owner-supplied items. Appliances, handles, lighting and faucets should each have a named buyer and an agreed delivery date. An item you buy yourself still has to arrive in time and be compatible with the design.
Layout changes need an early decision
A relocated sink or expanded opening can affect more than the visible kitchen. Before committing, ask what building work is involved and whether a specialist assessment is needed.
Discuss applicable approvals with the contractor using the City of Calgary home-improvement permit resources. Have the contract identify who obtains the permits and coordinates inspections for the agreed scope.
If older supply piping needs attention, price that before the new cabinets conceal access. Our Calgary Poly-B replacement guide explains why plumbing and restoration should be separate, visible parts of the budget.
Keep contingency distinct from upgrades
A contingency is money held for genuine unknowns. It should not disappear into a more expensive countertop before demolition starts.
For illustration, a $50,000 contract with a separate $5,000 reserve gives you $55,000 allocated before any other excluded costs. That is a budgeting example, not a recommended percentage for every project. Discuss an appropriate reserve after the contractor has assessed the house and explained what remains uncertain.
Record approved changes as they occur, including price and schedule effects. A running total is more useful than remembering several conversations about “small extras.”
Plan how you will live during the work
Ask when the sink, cooking facilities and refrigeration will be unavailable. Plan a temporary setup and include any extra living expenses in your own budget.
The schedule should identify material lead times and what must be on site before demolition. Ask who contacts you if a delivery slips and whether work can be resequenced. Avoid planning an important event around an optimistic completion estimate with no allowance for delays.
If a bathroom is also on the list, use our bathroom renovation cost guide to separate the two scopes. A combined contract should show what each project adds and which work is shared.
Find a relevant renovation business
Edge Pro Builders has a Calgary profile listing kitchen and other home renovations. Workshop Renovations & Decor is based in Okotoks and lists kitchen renovation services; ask whether it serves your location and project size.
Use the profiles to review services and contact information, then send each business the same brief. Include photographs, rough dimensions, priorities, budget and desired timing.
Can a kitchen be renovated for less than $35,000?
A narrower refresh may fit below a full-remodel budget. Define what stays, what changes and what is excluded rather than shrinking a full renovation to fit an arbitrary number.
Are appliances normally included?
Sometimes. Treat them as unconfirmed until the quote identifies the models or allowance and who purchases them.
What is the best way to compare quotes?
Compare a shared scope, matching selections and the final total including exclusions. The most detailed design is not helpful if the contract prices a different kitchen.
