Fence Cost in Calgary: Materials, Linear Feet & Quote Checklist

Estimate Calgary fence costs by material and length, account for gates and removal, and compare installation and refinishing options.

Published Calgary fence prices range from about $22–$42 per linear foot for pressure-treated wood to $38–$68 for standard vinyl in BVM Builders' 2026 guide. Cedar is listed at $28–$55 per linear foot. Those are one contractor's installed pricing ranges, not guaranteed prices for every property.

The most useful measurement is the length of fence you need, followed by height, material and gate requirements. A project described only as “a backyard fence” leaves too much room for different assumptions.

A starting budget by material

BVM Builders' Calgary fence guide publishes these installed ranges:

  • Pressure-treated wood: $22–$42 per linear foot.
  • Standard cedar: $28–$55 per linear foot.
  • Standard vinyl: $38–$68 per linear foot.
  • Galvanized chain link: $18–$35 per linear foot.
  • Horizontal cedar with steel posts: $55–$90 per linear foot.

At the published cedar range, 100 linear feet works out to $2,800–$5,500. That multiplication is a starting calculation, not a final project quote. Confirm GST, gates, existing-fence removal and site-specific work separately.

Measure the project, not the lot

Sketch each fence run and mark where gates are needed. Identify sections you want replaced, sections you intend to retain and areas where height or material changes.

Record whether a gate must accommodate only people or also equipment. A mower, trailer or future landscaping delivery can affect the opening you need. Decide this before posts are located.

Do not use the existing fence as proof of the legal property boundary. If its location is uncertain, resolve that before asking someone to reproduce it.

Posts, access and removal affect the installed price

Ask the installer to describe the post and footing specification for the proposed fence and site. Request details about how slopes, difficult access and existing landscaping will be handled.

Removal should be a separate, explicit item. An old fence may involve more than lifting boards off posts: the quotation should explain what happens to existing posts, footings and waste, and what surface restoration is included.

If the crew needs access through a neighbour's property, settle that permission before the work is scheduled. Do not assume the contractor can use the shortest route simply because it is convenient.

Check Calgary's rules before choosing height

The City of Calgary fence guidance explains applicable height and location requirements and when a development permit may be needed. New fences cannot extend onto City property.

Check the rules for your actual lot, particularly near street corners and where the front yard meets the side yard. A neighbour agreeing with your preferred design does not replace municipal requirements.

For a shared project, put the agreed design, location, payment arrangement and contractor choice in writing. If you cannot agree, resolve the issue before materials are ordered rather than expecting the installation crew to mediate.

Repair, refinish or replace?

Get the condition of the structure assessed before paying for cosmetic work. If the fence is structurally suitable, refinishing may be worth pricing. If posts or major sections require replacement, ask for separate repair and replacement options.

The Paintology Paintworks profile lists fence and deck painting in Calgary. It is relevant when you are assessing a finish project, not evidence that a damaged fence can be saved with paint.

Okotoks Exteriors also lists exterior and fence-painting services. Confirm location coverage and the specific scope before requesting a quote.

Coordinate the rest of the yard

A new fence can restrict access needed for later work. If a tree or stump is being assessed, discuss the sequence with the arborist and fence contractor before construction. Our tree removal cost guide explains which removal and cleanup items need separate prices.

Also think about winter use. Gate swing, snow storage and access to the public sidewalk affect day-to-day convenience. The Calgary snow removal guide includes a service-area checklist that can help you plan clear access.

These considerations do not automatically require a more expensive fence. They help avoid paying to alter a newly completed one.

Compare three complete quotes

Use the same sketch and specification for each quote. Ask for the total installed price, fence length, height, material, post specification, gate details, removal, cleanup and exclusions.

For example, a hypothetical 80-foot fence at $40 per foot has a $3,200 base calculation. If a quote excludes a gate and removal, those costs still need to be added before comparing it with an all-inclusive offer. The example is arithmetic, not a market price recommendation.

Is price per foot enough to choose a contractor?

No. It is useful only when height, materials, post construction and included work match.

Should staining be included?

Ask. Some contracts cover installation only. If finishing is planned, agree on the appropriate product and timing with the contractor.

Can I save money by removing the old fence myself?

Request both prices and clarify responsibilities. Confirm what must be removed, how utilities and access will be addressed, and what condition the site must be in before the installer arrives.
